THE ARTS· HUMANITY TOUCHING THE DIVINE was envisioned by Marywood University's President, Sister Mary Reap, I.H.M., Ph.D, to celebrate and conclude a year that was dedicated as "The Year of the Arts." The program was developed to cultivate awareness of how creativity, spirit, and the intellect are inextricably interwoven, and was an interdisciplinary effort of a Symposium Committee, composed of Marywood staff and faculty representing the art, music, and theatre departments, and an Advisory Board. The Arts have always been a main component of the liberal arts education at Marywood. At the core of the University's mission is a fundamental commitment to the creative, spiritual, and intellectual development of each individual. The Symposium brings together notable artists and presenters throughout the arts with educators, scholars, professionals, and the greater Marywood community-to celebrate and explore, to share and honor--how spirituality plays a role in our artistic development and ongoing creativity. Presenters from as far away as Ireland and from throughout the U.S. have come together to share their perspective and experiences on how artistic expression serves as a bridge between secular existence and the divine. It is the hope of the Symposium Committee that the event offers artists and Marywood's extended community a special opportunity-through the combining of workshops, presentations and panel discussions with performances and exhibitions- to share their inspirations and raise our awareness of how one's art and creativity are an expression of an inner reality-a moment revealed-a connection between the human soul and the divine spirit. We hope you enjoy the Symposium. Sandra Ward Povse Symposium Coordinator/Marywood Galleries Director
