The Student Mathematics Club
at Marywood is dedicated to the promotion of mathematics in the
community and to the involvement of its members in mathematical
organizations and their events. It has traditionally been one of the
most active clubs on campus and each year the members
participate in the following events.
- Attend at least one multi-day conference
in another city. This is usually the regional or national meeting
of NCTM
(National Council of Teachers of
Matheamtics), the PCTM
(Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of Mathematics), or the MAA
(Mathematical Association of America) national conference. Funds
for this conference are provided by money from the club account
which has been obtained from fundraisers sponsored by the club
during the year. Recent major trips have included:
- NCTM Regional Conference - October 15-17, 2006 in Atlantic City, NJ (Attended by 4 students + 2 faculty)
- NCTM Regional Conference -
October 13-16, 2004 in Baltimore, MD (Attended by 5 students +
1 faculty)
- AMS/MAA Joint Mathematics
Meetings - Jan. 15-18, 2003, Baltimore, MD (4 students + 2
faculty)
- PCTM State Conference - March
14-16, 2002, Philadelphia, PA (7 students + 2

faculty)
-
- Attend the Moravian Student
Mathematics Conference held every February on a Saturday.
Papers are presented by undergraduate students from many
Pennsylvania schools based on independent research they have done.
Marywood math majors have given many presentations at this
conference. Recently we attended on
Feb. 17, 2007 during which an excellent presentation was given by junior Colin Conrad concerning the work he has done in the search for k-smooth integers. Colin's results have deep significance in cryptology, the science of code encryption and decryption. For
more information on his paper and on other research by Marywood
math majors, please go to: Undergraduate

-
- Host the Marywood
High School Math Contest for
students from local high schools. This contest is held on a
Saturday morning every March and consists of two 40-50 problem
tests created by the math club. Level I is for freshmen and
sophomores and Level II is for juniors and seniors. Prizes are
awarded for the top five scores at each level ($75, $50, $40, $30,
$25). This year's contest was held Feb. 24, 2007 and over 230
students participated from 9 high schools.
-
- Gather at Dr. J's house every fall and
spring for the club barbecue and ping-pong/volleyball/basketball
tournament. The most recent barbecue was held on Oct. 30, 2006.
- .
- Attend the fall and/or the spring
meetings of NPCTM (Northeast Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of
Mathematics).
-
- Attend the fall MAA
(Mathematical Association of America) sectional meeting of
EPADEL
(Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware). This usually occurs on a
Saturday in November. The most recent meeting attended by Marywood
students was at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA.
