General Information

The annual mathematics contest sponsored by SEMI-Group, the Student Mathematics Club of Marywood University, is held on a Saturday morning (10:00 - 11:00 am) in the Liberal Arts Center of the Marywood campus every spring. The exam consists of 40 problems of gradually increasing difficulty. There are two versions of the exam. The Level I test is designed for ninth and tenth grade students, while the Level II version is more appropriate for eleventh and twelfth graders. No problems involve calculus. Any calculators approved by SAT test standards are allowed. A language dictionary may be allowed in special circumstances. Prizes are awarded to those students with the top five scores in each level as in the table below. If there are ties, the corresponding prizes will be evenly split with a minimum guarantee of $10 per student.

1st Place...$75.00
2nd Place...$50.00
3rd Place...$40.00
4th Place...$30.00
5th Place...$25.00

Additionally, a certificate will be awarded to the highest scoring student at each level for every school. Also, the students with the top 10 scores on the Level II exam become eligible to be a member of this year's Northeast Pennsylvania ARML (American Regions Mathematics League) team - coached by Dr. Chaogui Zhang. The 34th Annual ARML Contest will take place this year on  May 29-30, 2009 at Penn State University. Each year approximately 80 teams from all over the eastern United States and Canada participate in this very prestigious math competition. Visit our department ARML website for more information about the contest.
