ANNOUNCEMENTS

Consent Form Readability Tips
Many researchers struggle with lowering the readability of consent forms.  Below are two great references:
Simplification of Informed Consent Documents
OHSU's Tips on Writing a Comprehendible Consent Form
Because definitions and names may skew readability scores, Marywood's IRB requires no higher than a 10th grade reading level for consent forms when written for the average participant.

Certificate of Insurance (Research in Schools)
Recently, several researchers conducting studies in schools have been asked by the Principals and/or Superintendents to provide a liability certificate of insurance prior to receiving permission to conduct research at those locations.  Certificates of insurance are not within the purview of the IRB.  If the institution you are working with requests a certificate before they will write you a permission letter, please contact your Department.  The areas that are covered are specific and students pay a course fee to be covered under the student professional liability policy.  When the new certificates are issued by the insurance company each year (9/1), an electronic copy is forwarded to each department that has coverage. It is the researcher's responsibility to obtain such documentation directly from their Department if the school requests it. The IRB requires only the institution's permission letter as part of the IRB application.

IRBNet Training Sessions
Fourteen IRBNet training sessions and numerous classroom presentations were made in academic year 2008-2009. Future sessions will be scheduled according to need.
 New Button

Scanning
Scanners are available in all computer labs on campus, as well as in the training alcove in the LRC.  If you do not know how to use one, please see our Forms and Instructions page (under New Application Instructions, number 4), check with one of the computer lab assistants or contact Karen Boland (570-348-6211, x. 2355) or Kay McClintock (x. 2391) to arrange for scanner hardware training. Thank you.

IRBNet Electronic Submission Effective Date
Effective September 1, 2008, hardcopy and email submissions will no longer be accepted by Marywood University's IRB. All IRB applications will need to be submitted online through the IRBNet.org website at https://www.irbnet.org. Instructions are included on our Forms and Instructions page.

NOTE: At the present time, exempt applications that qualify for review by one of the 3 Departmental Review Boards (Psychology, School of Social Work or Nursing/Public Administration) SHOULD NOT be submitted via IRBNet.org. Instead, please submit them directly to the appropriate DRB .  Also, recruitment permission letters or cooperating institution letters for DRB applications should be sent directly to the DRB Chairperson, not to the IRB. Exempt studies for which there is no DRB should be submitted to the IRB via IRBNet.

CITI Training Effective Date
Effective September 1, 2008, all researchers, University sponsors, and anyone else engaged in research (i.e. co-investigators, research assistants, etc.) will need to complete the CITI Training Program, even if research qualifies for exempt review.  CITI training will replace the former NIH training, however, if a researcher is applying for an NIH grant, NIH training will also be required. Please see our CITI Training FAQs page.
