Medications:

- Selective
Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors- reduce the intensity of
the patient's impulse to act out the self-mutilative
behavior and reduce the intensity of the patient's
dysphoric feelings
- Monoamine
Oxidase Inhibitors- used on patient's who are very
sensitive to rejection
- Opiate
antagonist (Naloxone, Naltrexone)- used to treat heroin
addicts and can quell the cutting impulse
Psychological-Behavioral:
Ego
strengthening is designed to find something positive and
useful in the patient's life and focus on that.
Recognize
triggers and develop substitute behaviors to replace
self-mutilation. Here are a few suggestions:
