Master's Degree

The master's degree program is open to college graduates with a strong interest in criminal justice and the ambition to achieve or enhance management skills appropriate to this field. An undergraduate major in criminal justice is not required. However, students without prior undergraduate course work in criminology (a course in deviance or juvenile delinquency can be substituted) will be required to take such a course before enrolling in the graduate course in criminology. In like manner, successful completion of an undergraduate course in statistics or social research is required before enrolling in the graduate research methods course. An undergraduate average of B or better is expected, although exceptions will be made for otherwise strong candidates.

Applications to the program must include: official transcripts from all institutions attended (except Marywood), two letters of recommendation from college or university faculty (these may be supplemented with recommendations from supervisors in a criminal justice agency), and a 2-4 page expository essay discussing the applicant's career objectives and the way in which the CJ master's program will contribute to these objectives.

The program is designed to provide:
•  A knowledge of the history of American criminal justice institutions and their contemporary structure;
•  A knowledge of the causes of crime and delinquency, the effectiveness of rehabilitation efforts, and the research literature on which this knowledge is based;
•  The capacity to critically evaluate contemporary criminal justice research and policy;
•  The ability to construct and interpret financial statements, utilize manage information systems, manage personnel effectively, and/or interpret relevant administrative law;
•  The ability to communicate complex ideas in writing and orally, and to think analytically and critically.
